Greetings from our two regular trainers, Mike Bates and Paul Whitehead

At PL Projects, we like to think that project management training with us is different to training with other organisations. This is because everyone who works on PL Projects training courses also works in other parts of the company, be it consultancy, planning or other related work. This means that all our courses are staffed by people with up-to-date experience in the practical application of project management.

We are proud to be an accredited project management training partner of the Association for Project Management (APM) and offer course-based training towards the APM’s Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ) and Project Management Qualification (PMQ). These can be delivered as public courses in Yorkshire, particularly convenient for Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, Barnsley, Huddersfield and Halifax, or in-company anywhere in the UK.

Between us, we have over forty years’ experience of project management training as evidenced by grey hair and beards. Both of us were instrumental in developing and leading the undergraduate and postgraduate project management provision at the then Leeds Metropolitan University. Trainingwise, creating a new word, we also developed and delivered the APMP and Introductory Certificate courses, using old APM language, together with bespoke in-company courses to keep us busy. We continue to deliver the PFQ and PMQ, using new APM language, as well as risk management and MS Project courses all of which are delivered with the same enthusiasm and banter as always.

Mike Bates MSc MAPMMike Bates - PLP Project Management Training

I am reputedly the academic member of the management team at PL Projects, having joined PL Projects from the university sector. I like a challenge and consider problem solving as one of my fortes, registering as a significant ‘resource investigator’ on the Belbin profile. Whilst in the education sector, I taught on Project Management undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.  Alongside this I ran a range of residential project based activities in the Lake District where I developed a passion for planning and project controls.

Experience: I worked in the construction sector prior to moving into academia. During my time at Leeds Metropolitan University I developed the successful Project Management degree. Following the success of this I also set up the Centre for Project Management as a result of demand for project management training and consultancy.

I have worked recently with the RFL in getting them up and running with project management systems and with Alexander Dennis Ltd, where I organised the implementation of Project Server 2010 – software installation, system set-up and accompanying training. I have subsequently been involved with training and consultancy work with Virgin Money and most recently with Leeds City Council. Throughout, I have retained my position as an academic assessor for the Association for Project Management.

Paul Whitehead PLP Project Management TrainingPaul Whitehead MSc MAPM

Now retired from my day job, I am enjoying a bit more playing-out time whilst equally enjoying my new hobby… once again working on project management course development and delivery with Mike.

I spent the first half of my career initially on motorway design and construction. Following this I spent a lot of time tinkering about with roads and associated structures in the Barnsley area of South Yorkshire County Council. Abolition of the metropolitan authorities led to a change of direction. I joined what was then Leeds Polytechnic working for a decade or so delivering Civil Engineering courses.

New provision in project management needed staff and so I teamed up with Mike to work on the undergraduate degree. During this time, I co-developed the MSc in Project Management, taking on the course leader role for the next decade.

I maintain a keen interest in civil engineering as my tirade of abuse while driving around our rapidly deteriorating road network will affirm!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do the courses cost?

The Project Fundamentals course (PFQ) costs £450 + VAT (£540 in total). The Project Management Qualification (PMQ) costs £1050 + VAT (£1260 in total). For details and costs of other courses please ring Mike for details – 07765 892914.

Where are the courses run?

Our courses are currently run either at the Elsie Whiteley Innovation Centre in Halifax (serving Leeds, Manchester, Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield and Wakefield) or at the RSPB Old Moor training rooms in the Dearne Valley (serving Sheffield, Nottingham, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster). We also run evening courses in Leeds.

Can you deliver the courses for our staff at our premises?

Yes. We can run both our accredited and bespoke courses at locations and times to suit the needs of the business. In fact, we have just come back from running a course in Edinburgh! Please talk to Mike to discuss details – 07765 892914.

Do you do bespoke training?

Yes. We have designed and delivered courses ranging from simple introductions to project management to risk management to more sophisticated training around implementation of Enterprise Planning solutions. Ring Mike on 07765 892914 to discuss your requirements.

Do I need experience or previous knowledge to be able to undertake the courses?

Yes and no! If you wish to undertake the Project Fundamentals Qualification, the answer is no. However, if you are considering the Project Management Qualification, then you will need to have some knowledge and experience of working in a project environment. Unsure of the relevance of your experience? Call Mike on 07765 892914 to discuss.

Do you have any on-line training?

No. I’m afraid we are great believers in face to face delivery so that we are able to support you when you find difficulty with some of the topics. Furthermore, we think that humour and enthusiasm are key ingredients of any course delivery and you will find these in abundance.

Can I pay for the courses on-line?

We do not have an online booking system which allows you to book and pay online. Instead, if you wish to pay by card we can send you a secure Paypal request via email enabling quick and easy payment.

Do you run APM courses?

Yes, we run two courses; the Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ) is a two-and-a-half-day introduction to project management.  The Project Management Qualification (PMQ) is a 5 day course for those with some knowledge and experience of project management. The PMW is for those looking to develop their knowledge and career aspirations within the profession. PLP project management training is accredited by the Association for Project Management to deliver both of these courses. ur pass rates are  well in excess of the national averages.

What are your pass rates?

For the past two years our pass rate in the PFQ has been 100%. In the same period, the pass rate for the Project Management Qualification is approaching 90% which is nearly 15% about the national average.

What if I fail?

One of the strengths of PLP is that we care about our delegates. If you are unfortunate enough to fail, you will be able to undertake a resit for which there is a charge. However, we would invite you to attend courses (either the full course or just the parts you found difficult) in the future at no additional charge and we are prepared to offer some one to one support where we feel the individual would particularly benefit. You might have to buy the coffee and biscuits though!

What does APM accredited mean?

The Association for Project Management is the recently chartered professional body for the discipline of project management within the UK. As part of its remit, it establishes standards and codes of practice for what the aspiring project professional needs to know. It sets the syllabus and examinations for the PFQ and PMQ and assesses project management training providers like PLP Training to see that its course material and trainers meet the relevant standard.

How long do the courses take?

The PFQ is a two and a half day full time course and the PMQ is 5 days full time. We do run an evening only version of the PMQ in Leeds as a one night per week option. This is run on Thursday evenings and takes 13 weeks. We are currently reviewing whether there is demand for the PFQ in a similar once per week evening format which would take about 6 weeks. Please let Mike know – – if this route is of interest to you or your organisation.

Will I need to do any work in advance of the course?

For our two APM courses the answer is yes. For the PFQ you will be sent some pre-reading material in advance of the course start. This is about the project life cycle and helps you to establish a framework of key concepts on which to develop your learning. For the PMQ, the process is the same, but the material is more substantial and will be sent earlier.

How are the courses assessed?

Exams!!. The PFQ has a one hour multi-choice examination at the end of the course. The PMQ is a three hour written examination where the delegates have to answer 10 questions from a choice of 16. Our other courses typically do not have an associated assessment, but on some bespoke courses these can be arranged where it is felt that this will assist with the learning.
